Google Trends: Where is the API?

Filed under: Google Trends — admin @ 12:49 pm

I rarely use Google Trends, prefering instead the advanced features of Google Insights for Search. I returned to the site, however, as Google announced a Google Trends Widget.

Whilst interesting, it’s a far cry from the Application Programming Interface we were assured was coming back in 2007!

I often get annoyed at the state of APIs (e.g., here and here), but to promise an API and then 18 months later roll out a crappy little widget is just annoying.

  1. Seems like Google tries to confuse people, publishing widgets, or "APIs" only usable under the browser/javascript ecosystem.

  2. Is there anything out there that amounts to a (legal) search trends API perhaps with a different service? Such an API would have strong implications for 3rd party software engineers.

I can see why google wants to protect this information, but it seems like a relatively small service they could provide in exchange for monopolizing the search engine domain.

  3. @josh I've not come across a legal search trends API, but you're right, it would be a great tool.
